AI Research Scientist

I am a Principal Research Scientist in the Applied Technologies/Data Vision group working mainly in the areas of artificial intelligence, data science and signal processing. I have more than 30 years of research experience in machine learning and physical systems modelling in applications that include heat transfer, acoustics and the transmission of structure-borne sound.

Most recently, I have been involved in researching the use of deep neural networks for natural language processing, for spatial audio and for spatial modelling and understanding 3D objects from 2D images. Neural networks are machine learning algorithms that learn from data and have architectures that were originally inspired by the workings of neurons in the human brain.

Large language models are a special research interest and, in particular, their potential for extracting knowledge from collections of text and image documents as well as other forms of data. The ability of these models to reason incrementally, to plan and to be creative promises to be the basis for fascinating work in the future.
