AbstractThe synthesis, densification and properties of SiAlON bodies and composites were discussed. Structural analysis tools, such as solid state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), Rietveld X-ray powder crystallography and ion beam analysis techniques were used to follow and explain processing routes and reaction paths for sialon materials and composites. The research was focussed on the development of body densification and sintering technologies, with emphasis on low temperature routes using zero or minimal sintering aids.
