Abstract | Measurements of the refractive indices for the three phases of the toluene-brine-sodium dodecyl sulfate-butanol system, and the coefficient of ellipticity of the system's microemulsion/oil, microemulsion/water, and oil/water interfaces have been made for varying brine salinity. A dramatic change in the nature of the microemulsion/oil, water interfaces is observed. Near the limiting salinities where one phase disappears the corresponding interface is apparently diffuse, but beyond the mid-point salinity for the microemulsion phase the coefficient of ellipticity indicates a layer interface containing a sandwich of the disappearing phase. The oil/water interface shows the presence of an intruding microemulsion layer. © 1984. |
