The Government has announced that Callaghan Innovation is to be disestablished, as part of its reform of the science, innovation and technology system.

What's in this article

It will take some months to work through the process of disestablishment and change will happen at pace. Our current priorities are to support our people and customers as we work through this process. All existing contracts will continue to be honoured during the process.

In accordance with the Government’s direction, the following products and services are in the process of being transferred to MBIE:

      • Research & Development Tax Incentive
      • Technology Incubator programme
      • Founder & Startup Support programme
      • New to R&D Grant
      • Ārohia Trailblazer Grant
      • Ārohia Evidence Grant
      • Project Grants
      • R&D Loans
      • Transition Support Payment
      • Student Grants
      • HealthTech Activator

We are still accepting applications for the products and services listed below – if you have questions or are considering applying, please reach out as usual. We will continue processing, assessing, and approving applications. Our teams are operating as normal, and support remains available.

Applications for Student Career Grants are temporarily on hold due to high demand and the full allocation of the appropriation. This is a standard operational decision made by Callaghan Innovation in the annual lifecycle of this grant, and is independent of the Government’s decision to disestablish Callaghan Innovation. Further funds will be available from 1 July 2025.

Applications for Student Experience Grants are anticipated to open as planned in June or July 2025.

For products and services not listed above, we are actively working to finalise the details and will keep customers informed as more information becomes available.

The Measurement Standards Laboratory (MSL) will transfer to the new earth sciences-focused Primary Research Organisation (PRO), which will be formed through the merger of the Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) and the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited (GNS Science). In the meantime, MSL continues to operate as usual and remains available to assist with any enquiries about its services.

If you need any support or have specific concerns, please get in touch with your Callaghan Innovation contact.
