AbstractA statistical theory of instability of single and multichannel sound systems in reverberant spaces is developed. The theory is applied to single channel systems with forward transfer functions that have allpass, Rayleigh and Ricean distributed magnitudes, which commonly occur if reverberation devices are employed. Monte Carlo simulations are used to investigate the effects of correlation between samples, and to derive the most accurate expression of stability. It is verified that the allpass case produces the least risk of instability for the same mean loop gain. The stability of multichannel systems is considered, and Monte Carlo simulations used to verify the derived multichannel stability formula. An achievable power gain for a given number of channels is derived, and compared with previous predictions.
