AbstractWe have applied Nuclear Reaction Analysis (NRA) with the 14N(d,α1) reaction to the determination of 14N depth profiles in the outer few μm of thermally nitrided titanium and Ti6A14V, showing significant differences between the behaviour of these two systems. We show how both 14N and 15N may be simultaneously depth profiled by NRA for isotopic tracing, and show the high degree of exchange that occurs between the existing nitride and the gas phase during thermal nitridation. Combined use of NRA for 16O and high resolution depth profiling via the 429 keV narrow resonance in 15N(p,αγ) shows that the thermal nitride has a surface oxide layer, completely nitrogen free, a few tens of Å thick. © 1995.
