Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and Callaghan Innovation are teaming up to create a business accelerator dedicated to speeding up the development of early stage Māori businesses.

The accelerator comes under the umbrella of start-up support administered by Callaghan Innovation, and is funded through the Te Pūnaha Hiringa Māori Innovation Fund administered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

Te Pūnaha Hiringa: Māori Innovation Fund has allocated funding for a pilot Māori Founder-Focused Accelerator Programme.

The main objectives of the Māori Founder-Focused Accelerator Programme are to:

  • Support Māori-led start-ups and entrepreneurs to develop innovative products and businesses that will drive growth in New Zealand’s economy
  • Develop the capability of emerging Māori entrepreneurs through mentoring and specialised training to accelerate their readiness for market entry, investment and growth
  • Build capability in the Māori entrepreneurship and start-up ecosystem, by for example, developing networks, mentors and investors.

The ultimate outcomes of this Accelerator Programme is to have more Māori-led high growth, globally ready businesses, a larger cohort of innovative Māori entrepreneurs who can drive these projects, and a stronger pipeline of ventures that encourages private investment engagement with Māori start-up businesses.

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa will formally launch the Māori Founder-Focused Accelerator Programme in due course.
