AbstractThe success of recreational rigid inflatable boats has seen this high performance hull-form applied to increasingly complex and more demanding roles. As the size, speed and range of operation for these vessel's increases, there is a requirement for an improved understanding of structural loads and motions. A research programme to measure and predict the seakeeping performance and structural response of small high performance vessel's has been established by Industrial Research Limited to foster continued innovation by the New Zealand boatbuilding industry. This paper reports results of measurements and predictions undertaken on 12m RIB's used by the Auckland Maritime Police Unit for policing duties during the America's Cup 2000 campaign.
