AbstractThe time-of-swing experiment for measuring the gravitational constant is considered. The expression for the gravitational attraction of the cylinder is derived. The cases of no damping, viscous damping and a general damping are studied. Modeling the environment as a bath of non-interacting modes the equation of motion of the pendulum is derived in terms of the experimentally obtainable spectral function.
