AbstractThe client focus of the quality philosophy is forcing calibration laboratories to tighten the meaning of both calibration and traceability. In this paper we present a standards laboratory's view of the impact of this client focus on the providers and users of calibration services. In particular, we identify and discuss the attributes required of a calibration by considering the needs of the calibration user. One key attribute, the assurance of reliability, raises some very testing questions not only for instrument users and calibrators but also the designers and manufacturers of instruments.
