Career grant aims to get more New Zealand graduate students and businesses working together on R&D projects.

Callaghan Innovation today launched an improved R&D Career Grant programme.

R&D Career Grants help a Masters or PhD graduate students get their first job in a New Zealand R&D business by paying the student’s salary for six months (up to $35,000).

The internships are a valuable stepping stone for students wanting to gain commercial experience and further their career in R&D. In turn, the business benefits from the student’s advanced knowledge and expertise in solving an R&D problem faced in the development of a new product, process or service. The grant is available throughout the year to eligible businesses and graduates.

Sharon Burleigh, Callaghan Innovation’s Group Manager Grants says, ‘We’ve listened to feedback from our customers and have made improvements to our R&D (Student) Career Grant to make it easier for businesses to apply.’

Some of these improvements include:

  • Streamlining the application and assessment processes to make it easier and faster for businesses to apply.
  • Widening the eligibility criteria to allow more businesses to qualify.
  • Making a distinction between Masters and PhD qualifications by increasing grant value for PhD to $35,000 (Masters remains at $30,000).
  • Increasing how often a business can claim funding to monthly from quarterly.
  • Increasing the maximum number of Career Grants a business can have at one time (up to three).

Businesses wanting to find out more about these changes and if they are eligible for an R&D Career Grant, should contact their Callaghan Innovation account manager, Regional Business Partner or call 0800 4 CALLAGHAN (0800 422 552).

Students can find interested businesses through:

Businesses that are currently applying for a R&D Career Grant will not be affected by these changes.
